Denver Dispensary Tip: Guide to Making Cannabutter

December 7, 2016

Are you planning on baking holiday cookies with a little something special added to the recipe this year? If you plan on doing any special cooking in the kitchen, one ingredient you will need to make is cannabutter. Here’s a guide on how to do so:

First, buy marijuana

Visit one of the many marijuana dispensaries in Denver and choose a strain of marijuana that works well in edibles. If you’re not sure which one you should choose, ask one of the budtenders for help with this decision.

Heat the cannabis

If you don’t allow your cannabis to go through decarboxylation, you won’t feel any of the desired effects of the THC cannabinoid once you eat the finished product. To ensure this doesn’t happen, place the cannabis on a baking sheet in a single layer and put it in the oven at 240 degrees Fahrenheit for around 35 minutes. Check every 10 minutes or so and turn the cannabis around on the baking sheet so that every inch of the substance is able to go through decarboxylation. When the process is complete, the cannabis will be dry and may begin to break down into smaller pieces when you touch it. What is decarboxylation? Find out here.

Boil the butter

Bring water to a boil on the stove and add one stick of butter for every ounce of marijuana you have available. Wait until the butter has completely melted before you throw in the crumbled marijuana and turn the temperature down to a low simmer. Unfortunately, now you will have to wait for about two hours while the cannabutter cooks.

Filter out the butter

After the two hours has passed, you will need to remove the pot from heat and put your finished product in a heat-safe container. However, you need to remove the crumbled pieces of marijuana, so use a colander or other straining tool so only the liquid is transferred into the container.

Let it cool

Place the container in your refrigerator and allow it to cool for about an hour. At the end of the hour, you will notice a butter-like substance forming at the top of the container. If this has formed, your cannabutter is cooled off and ready to be used. You may need to take a small spatula or butter knife and scrape the edges of the container in order to remove the butter and transfer it into another container for use.

Final note

This butter has now been infused with THC, and can be added to any recipes that call for butter. If you plan on serving your finished products to guests, make sure you inform them the item has been infused with cannabis so they are aware of what they’re eating.
