Denver Weed Shop Gives You a Cannabis Cheat Sheet: Sativa Versus Indica

Denver Weed Shop Gives You a Cannabis Cheat Sheet: Sativa Versus Indica

Weed enthusiasts in Denver and beyond are likely familiar with the terms Indica and Sativa. Although opinions vary, most people know about the supposed body high of an Indica strain and the cerebral rush of a Sativa strain. Further, there is a supposed varied effect with hybrids. If you go into a weed shop, you’ll find many different cannabis strains, and you’ll find them labeled with one of these three terms: Indica, Sativa, and hybrid.

We’ve put together a guide to help you the next time you want to make a marijuana purchase so you can achieve your preferred results.

The Origins of the Indica Versus Sativa Debate

These two terms have been part of the cannabis conversation since the mid-1700s. Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, labeled psychoactive cannabis plants like Cannabis sativa. Later on, in the late 1700s, French biologist Jean Baptiste Lamarck identified Cannabis indica as a different species.

Scientists are still making cannabis discoveries, arguing that Sativa and Indica subspecies may have predated human intervention. The takeaway? These terms were created for botany purposes—and not for their pharmacologic effects on the human body.

Growers use Indica, Sativa, and hybrid to categorize plants based on their growth characteristics and the resultant chemical profiles. Retailers may then market cannabis to consumers by organizing strains under these terms, so buyers should understand that these categorizations are rather misleading. The terms remain, however, because they still serve a purpose for cultivators—and for retailers, it’s simply habit.

The Differences Between Indica and Sativa

Indica plants tend to be shorter plants with thick stems and broad, deep-green leaves. Their flowering cycle is short, and they do well in cold weather. Sativa plants usually grow taller with light-green, narrow leaves. Their flowering cycle is longer, and they do better in warmer climates.

In the past half-century of cannabis cultivation, growers have crossbred widely, so there is no pure Indica or Sativa at this point. When a particular strain is classified as Indica or Sativa, this usually just refers to which side of the indica-sativa spectrum it leans toward.

The Effects of Sativa Versus Indica

If you do some research, you’ll probably encounter sativa descriptions using terms such as “heady,” “cerebral,” or “energizing” as opposed to words for indica such as “relaxing” and “sedating.” These are still valid descriptors as long as you realize that these might not represent the actual plant’s lineage.

Hybrid strains are just as popular as indicas and sativas—and maybe even more so. More and more cannabis products are labeled hybrid because of the accuracy of that description.

Best Marijuana Strains for Sparking Your Creativity

Best Marijuana Strains for Sparking Your Creativity

Most regular marijuana users will tell you that the stereotypical stoner who sits around snacking and playing video games is just that—a stereotype. Although some strains of weed definitely put imbibers in the mood to chill out, others have a different effect on people. Some strains, in fact, can be used to get the creative juices flowing.

Let’s take a look at some different strains—and not in any particular order.

AK-47

This often tops best lists for creative endeavors. AK-47 has a sweet, fruity taste, and it is known for providing uplifting highs that contribute to creativity. Most plants have about 15 to 20 percent THC content.

Amnesia Haze

With upward of 20 percent THC, this citrusy strain provides energetic highs that are ideal for sparking creativity. People who use this strain usually report feeling happy and enjoying social activities much more than without it.

Purple Haze

Purple Haze is a classic strain that has been a top choice for musicians and creatives for decades. There is some controversy over the precise lineage of this strain, but it’s probably one of the most well-known strains, thanks to the legendary song by Jimi Hendrix. It provides an energy-filled high along with a sweet flavor that is somewhat similar to blackberries.

Blue Dream

This sativa-dominant cannabis strain is a favorite among cannabis users who are using weed medicinally because it provides relief without the intense high. It has a fruit taste reminiscent of blueberries (hence its name) and gives smokers energy and motivation without the brain fog that often accompanies a high.

Northern Lights

If your creativity muscle is flexed through relaxation, Northern Lights might be the strain for you. Its lime-green buds have 16 to 20 percent THC, which provides a heavy sedation effect. Some users tout getting intense feelings of euphoria from it.

Sour Diesel

People who are anxious and depressed might benefit from Sour Diesel as much as creative types. This strain is well known for providing an energetic high, although it might not be the tastiest variety with its sour smell and taste that is similar to diesel fuel (which is certainly how it got its name). Expect THC levels of about 15 to 25 percent with this strain.

Kali Mist

For an uplifting, motivating high, try Kali Mist. Its aroma is citrusy and piney and light, so this is a good option for taking a hit when you are trying to be discreet. Its densely packed buds not only contribute to creativity but are also recommended for treating conditions such as ADHD, chronic pain, and depression.

Answers to Common Questions About Cannabis

Answers to Common Questions About Cannabis

With the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado, more and more people are giving the pot a try. The stigma of pot use limited to the junk-food-craving stoner is vanishing, but there are still plenty of myths surrounding marijuana. For those who might be new to using weed, here are some common questions—along with detailed answers.

What’s the difference between CBD and THC?

Cannabidiol, which is commonly referred to as CBD, and tetrahydrocannabinol, which is better known as THC, are two of the naturally occurring elements found in plants that are part of the Cannabis genus. The molecular structures of CBD and THC are similar but the way they interact with the body is very different. The main difference between the two is that CBD is a nonpsychoactive compound, so it doesn’t make a person high. TCH is a psychoactive compound, which is why it provides the high that cannabis users enjoy experiencing.

What is the best way to consume cannabis?

While smoking pot and ingesting foods that have been enhanced with a pot are the two most common ways people consume cannabis. But with the legalization of weed comes a slew of new products being developed. These include topical creams and ointments, lotions, balms, and bath bombs, and salts with CBD, so they do not produce a high.

How does cannabis consumption impact the body?

Many factors go into how a substance affects the body. This can include a person’s previous experience with the substance, their genetic makeup, the way it is ingested, and the properties of the substance. Pre-existing healthy conditions and medications a person is taking can also factor in.

Does the strain of cannabis you choose make any difference?

In short, yes. Many people are aware that there are two common strains of the cannabis plant: (1) cannabis indica and (2) cannabis sativa. Both strains are associated with providing a different type of high. For example, one strain will contribute to a more relaxing high while the other creates more of an energetic high. Since cannabis is a natural product that grows, strains will vary naturally. Your best bet is to talk with a knowledgeable budtender if you are seeking a specific type of high.

Can you overdose on cannabis?

Overdosing among adults who use cannabis is highly unlikely. There have been no documented cases of anyone dying from using too much pot. But pot should still be used responsibly, much like alcohol, so driving or operating machinery while under the influence should be avoided. Pot should also be stored properly and kept away from children and pets.

Is consuming cannabis good for your health?

Many people use cannabis to ease symptoms caused by other illnesses and conditions. Even in states where marijuana for recreational use is illegal many have laws allowing people to use medical marijuana.

What’s the Difference Between Sativa and Indica Edibles?

October 4, 2021

What’s the Difference Between Sativa and Indica Edibles?

People who use cannabis in edible form should know that certain strains are likely to be especially well-suited for their needs, depending upon the type of high they are seeking. Much as it is with smoking cannabis, the effects of consuming cannabis by mouth will somewhat depend on the strain that you choose from your favorite Denver marijuana dispensary.

Sativa strains offer a psychoactive high that is generally considered exhilarating rather than relaxing. Because of its uplifting side effects, many cannabis users prefer to use Sativa recreationally when they want to improve or increase their energy. Indica edibles, on the other hand, provide users with a more relaxed and calm feeling. It should, however, be mentioned that edibles tend to produce both a stronger physical high and stronger mental high than cannabis that is smoked. Also, edibles tend to provide a more sedating effect than smoked cannabis for some users.

Sativa for Recreational Use

Sativa provides a psychoactive high that tends to be a stimulating, exhilarating experience. Sativa staves off mental fatigue. If you have a tough time going to social events, such as parties, Sativa can help get you into the party mood.

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is one of the cannabis compounds that allow a better psychoactive effect and Sativa strains have lots. Most budtenders will tell you that for recreational cannabis, a Sativa strain might be your best bet.

Sativa for Medical Use

Sativa is also good for medical purposes.

  • Effective pain relief. People who suffer from chronic pain can consume Sativa edibles for nearly instant relief. It helps with muscle strain, severe headaches, and other physical pain.
  • Side effects of chemotherapy. Cancer patients who are going through chemotherapy might have symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite—all of which can be alleviated with Sativa edibles.

Indica for Recreational Use

Indica is the go-to variety of cannabis for fans who are seeking a recreational but relaxed high. It’s suitable whether you are planning to spend an evening alone or with friends. Indica edibles relax the nerves and muscles, helping users unwind after a busy day of deadlines, meetings, and other work stress. Its sedating effect puts the brain at rest, giving it time to rejuvenate without any of the nasty side effects that so often accompany pharmaceuticals.

Indica for Medical Use

Indica strains can be extremely effective for many medical conditions.

  • Insomnia. Many people who suffer from insomnia complain that they cannot get their brains to turn off. This is where Indica strains are so effective because of their calming effect.
  • Pain relief. Indica strains offer natural pain relief for chronic aches and pains, muscle strains, inflammation, and headaches—without any side effects.

Denver Dispensary Shares 4 Key Things You Need to Know About Vaping CBD

Denver Dispensary Shares 4 Key Things You Need to Know About Vaping CBD

CBD is one of the most popular items on the market right now. It provides many benefits and can be used safely without forcing you to worry about getting high. While you can take it topically or enjoy a CBD-infused edible, it’s also easy to vape! But before you pick up your first CBD vape cartridge from your Denver weed shop, make sure you know what to expect. Here are a few must-know tidbits.

You’ll Still Have to Choose the Right Type

CBD cartridges are available in the same varieties as the tinctures you have access to at your dispensary. This means you’ll need to choose between full-spectrum, isolate, and broad spectrum CBD. The type you choose is largely personal preference. However, most people prefer full-spectrum options. These cartridges have more of the beneficial cannabinoids that help your body get the most out of the CBD. Keep in mind that isolate and broad spectrum will still be effective.

It’s Best to Avoid Cartridges Purchased Outside the Dispensary

You’ve likely heard about the vaping lung disease going around. Though the exact cause of the disease has yet to be determined, most cases have one thing in common: the cartridges were purchased on the street or online from unverified sources. These cartridges aren’t certified to have the ingredients mentioned on the packaging and if you’re not sure what you’re inhaling, you’re putting your health at risk.

Cartridges purchased at local dispensaries have been carefully selected for their quality manufacturing and pure ingredients. Best of all, the manufacturers behind the products are licensed and monitored by local governments to make sure they’re in full compliance on the production line.

Understand the Potency

CBD products, like both medical and recreational marijuana products, are labeled for potency. The higher the number on the label, the more CBD you’ll get in each dose. But remember, the number on the package isn’t the amount of CBD you’ll get in every dose—it’s the amount contained in the entire product. That said, the highest potency products may not be the ones you enjoy using most. Experiment with different types of CBD vapes and start using the ones you respond best to. There’s no right or wrong answer here.

Vapes Are the Easiest Way to Get Potent CBD

Vaping CBD isn’t the only way to get the beneficial cannabinoids you’re looking for. But it is one of the best ways to do it. Since you’re inhaling the concentrate, your body gets more out of each dose. You’re not losing CBD to your digestive tract or accidentally cooking off its potency by adding tincture to hot tea. That said, it can cause some throat and lung irritation if you have pre-existing upper respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies. If you’re interested in trying it, start with the smallest dose possible and make sure you feel good after using it.
